Tharion sighed and rubbed his temples. The newcomer was giving him a headache. Perhaps Fiera's lack of patience has started to rub off on me, or maybe the nymph really is that trying on the nerves, he thought to himself.
He debated just leaving the nymph alone and going home with his family. Fiera may be acting as though Duvessa's death didn't unsettle her, but he knew her better than that. He could see the pain in her cold grey eyes. She needed him, but she would never admit it. Yali had watched her friend be slaughtered mercilessly in front of her. Such a young child and already she had seen so much violence and destruction in her life.
My family needs me more than this stranger, he finally decided, turning to walk home, but Granny Oak calling out stopped him.
"Where are you going, child? Sori went that way," she said, pointing in the opposite direction.
"I know, Granny. She will be fine on her own. I have a family at home. That's more important," he called back to her.
"General Tharion!" she admonished. "Would the Commander be impressed with you if this Sori person decided to attack us and you did nothing to prevent it?"
Tharion winced. Fiera was his lover, but she was also his superior in military terms. He would more than likely be thrown out of her house on his ear if she knew he put two people before the safety of the entire Forest. He needed to follow Sori.
He ran in the direction Granny Oak had pointed out, into the thickets and brambles. As he expected, he came across the nymph, trying to look for some sort of exit. A futile effort. Didn't this foreigner know anything? Surely she had heard the myth of the Mystic Forest somewhere in her travels? "You won't find a way out," he told her simply. "The Mystic Forest only reveals itself to those of the Lady's choosing and so does the exit."
